What is QKD?
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) enables secure communication using quantum mechanics. The two parties can create a random secret shared key that can later be used to encrypt and decrypt messages.
An important and unique feature of QKD is the ability to detect eavesdropping attempts by third parties and obtain information about the key. This is due to the fundamental properties of quantum mechanics: the measurement process of a quantum system disrupts its state. A third party attempting to wiretap must measure the state of this system, thus introducing noise that can be measured. Our key exchange protocol can detect any eavesdropping attempts based on the phenomena of quantum entanglement. If the amount of the eavesdropped information exceeds a certain threshold the given key is discarded and the system proceeds to generating another random key.
The security of our solution does not rely on trusting any parts of the quantum device. This is the first, truly unconditional security QKD system.
Fiber-based
Our devices operate at 1550 nm telecom wavelength, thus providing perfect match with existing fibers for local and municipal-area networks, creating a true quantum Virtual Private Network. This is a perfect fit to connect branches of a company or to establish secure connections between datacenters.
Free-space
If connecting to the optical fiber is not an option, one can connect our terminals with a free-space directed optical link. It can operate even in daylight, provided that the masts with optical equipment can “see” each other in a straight line. In this way one can connect even to moving vessels or islands, where it is quite difficult to build a cable infrastructure.
Satellite
Need to connect over larger distances? Try a satellite! Our solution is designed to fully operate over large distances with our purpose-built low-Earth-orbit satellite system. Instead of a satellite dish, we use optical automated telescopes which connect to the satellite and safely exchange the cryptographic keys in any terrain.
